Peridot, the birthstone for the month of August
For Maison Surya Mathew, stones are at the heart of its creations. Surya Mathew selects them with particular attention paid to their origin, their brilliance, their energy and their symbolism.

A stone of fire and sun, peridot has radiated since the dawn of civilizations. Revered by the Egyptians as a sacred gem, it was called the Sun Stone, an earthly light born from the heart of volcanoes. Also known under the names of olivine or chrysolite, it was discovered around 1500 BC on the island of Topazios, now Zabargad, an isolated jewel in the Red Sea.
Over the centuries, this gem has crossed kingdoms and empires. Present in the Bible, peridot is one of the twelve sacred stones that adorn the breastplate of the high priest Aaron and is said to be one of the founding stones of Jerusalem. Brought back from the East by the Crusaders, peridot was set in the royal treasures of Europe. With its olive green, linden or apple hue, it already captured the fascinated glances of the Romans, who nicknamed it “the emerald of the evening”, because of its mysterious brilliance in the light of the torches. The large peridot of Cologne Cathedral, long mistaken for an emerald, alone recalls the nobility of its brilliance.
In fine jewelry, peridot seduces with its natural modernity. Its palette of greens matches perfectly with yellow gold, the delicacy of platinum or the softness of mother-of-pearl. It lights up the most daring as well as the most classic creations, giving each piece a personal signature.
The Creator's Word
“Peridot, also called the stone of light or the stone of the sun, was venerated in ancient Egypt as a sacred symbol of the god Ra. Its soft light soothes tensions, strengthens the bonds of the heart and inspires serenity. Its beauty is particularly revealed in an oval cut, which highlights its natural brilliance. In India, peridot is associated with the harmonization of the chakras, especially the heart chakra, the center of love, compassion and healing. Combined with blue sapphire or other hot stones, it creates color harmonies that celebrate the life and energy of the natural world.”
You can integrate this gem into a tailor-made piece of High Jewelry or personalize jewelry from one of our Talisman collections. A unique piece of jewelry, a reflection of your uniqueness and sublimating your birthstone.
