The Pearl, the birthstone for the month of June
Gemstones are at the heart of Surya Mathew’s creations. Surya Mathew selects them with particular attention to their origin, their brilliance, their energy, and their symbolism.

Each month is linked to a birthstone, the pearl is celebrated in June.
Every pearl is born of a mystery, whether natural or guided by the hand of man. Regarded in mythology as a gift from the gods or a tear of the sea, it emerges from waters across the globe, California, Polynesia, the Philippines, Japan. From the black pearls of Tahiti to the gold of the Philippines, and the pink or blue reflections from Mexico, each shade is a living memory of the ocean.
A treasure of High Jewelry, the pearl is sublimated by artisans. Whether as necklaces, rings, or earrings like drops of light, they gracefully adorn the human body.
One cannot speak of pearls without evoking Gabrielle Chanel. As early as the 1920s, she broke the rules by mixing real and faux pearls, natural and cultured. For her, the pearl was a gesture of freedom. She turned it into a symbol of femininity and refinement without ostentation.
In the traditions of Asia, Persia, or India, the pearl embodies wisdom and protection. In China, it purifies the soul; in India, it brings good luck; in Japan, it is said to have medicinal virtues for both body and mind. To wear a pearl is to wrap oneself in a soft light, a balance between being and appearing.
The Creator's Word
“The pearl symbolizes purity through its color, as well as birth, hence the English expression "mother of pearl," which refers to the nacre within the shell that gives life to the pearl. This bond between the shell and the pearl symbolizes renewal, transformation, and transmission. It is a rebirth, a soaring, a change, and an evolution, a reminder never to forget where we come from, who we are, and what we are destined to become. Traditionally, a pearl necklace is gifted to a young woman on her 18th birthday. This gesture symbolizes the bond with the mother; it is a piece of jewelry marking the transition into adulthood and the departure from home, while preserving that maternal connection. The various shapes and colors of pearls reveal the full richness and diversity of nacre. The "orient" of a pearl, a phenomenon of iridescence manifested by a rainbow-like play of colors on its surface, defines its brilliance. Each origin brings its own hue, shape, and light. The pearl is a gemstone that transcends eras. It must retain its original meaning: a symbol of purity, connection, and transformation that continually helps us grow.”
